Named “chemin de fer” in France, baccarat in England, Punto banco in Argentina and Cuba, baccarat is a card game opposing two parties: the players called spades and the banker. It is very easy to play and understand. Basically based on luck, baccarat is a very popular game in casinos and is among the list of the most popular games online too.

What is baccarat?

The principles of baccarat

Baccarat has been played since the 15th century. In casinos, it is most often played at a table that can accommodate casino traders and more than a dozen participants. The principles of baccarat are very simple: the goal of the game is to reach a score closest to 9 and the object of it is to bet on the hand that is believed to have the highest value, a hand with two or three cards maximum.

Counting points is not difficult at all. The As card is worth 1 point, then each card in the suite is worth its face value, but the 10, the valet, the lady and the king are equal to zero, they are also called logs. Baccarat is played with two cards in hand for both games, or up to three cards. The value of a hand is the sum of the values of the cards. For sums greater than ten, the value taken into account is that of the unit’s digit. For example, if the player has a 7 and a 9 in hand, the value of his hand is not 16 but 6, if the total of cards a participant has in hand is 23, the value of that hand is 3. There can therefore be a value greater than 9.

How to play baccarat?

The beginning of baccarat is to bet on the hand of the banker or the player’s hand, or on a tie or deadlock. Then, the dealer of the casino distributes the cards. Then, depending on the value of his hand, the player decides whether or not he wants a third card. If the player does not wish to draw, he can “pass the shoe”. The winner is the one with the value closest to 9. As long as the bank wins, the shoe stays with a player; when the latter wins, the shoe passes to the next player.

Certain rules are to be respected in the game of baccarat. Among others, that of the “natural”, that is to say when the total of the first two cards of a hand is equal to 8 or 9, no more card is to be treated. This is called the natural. If not, the dealer may still distribute a third card. Nevertheless, the processing of the third card follows certain rules depending on whether it is the third of the player or the bank.

The treatment of the third card

The rules relating to the third card apply more or less instinctively. For example, when a natural occurs, no more cards are to be processed. The rule of the natural always prevails. In addition, when the total of the player’s hand is less than or equal to 5, the player may or may not request a third card. In the first case, the third party will determine whether or not the bank takes a third card in turn. If not, that is, if the player does not process a third card, then the bank takes if his hand totals 5 or less. It is these rules that govern the game when it is the third of the player who governs.

Moreover, when it is the third of the bank that governs, other rules apply. These depend on the total of the bank’s hand. Whether the bank’s total is 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, it will still be able to process a third card but under certain conditions. For example, if the bank’s hand is worth 2 points or less, then it draws a third card; if its total is 3, it can not process a third if a player has a total of 8; for a total of 4, she will not be able to draw a third card if the players have a 0, 1, 8 or 9; for a total of 5, she treats a third if the players have 4, 5, 6, or 7; and if its total is 6, it takes a third if the players have 6 or 7.
